Building Plan

In 2006, AMP purchased two former mill buildings and three surrounding acres on Whiting Street in Winsted, Connecticut, a town with a history of the work the mural celebrates. Extensive cleanup of the property was made possible through a Federal Brownfields grant, allowing for the next three phases of renovation to occur.

The State of Connecticut provided $1 Million in matching funds for the first phase of renovations, enabling AMP to renovate the first of two mill buildings it owns. The first phase includes raising the roof 25 feet to allow for the installation of the nearly five-story mural and will enable the arts center to open to the public. The two subsequent phases involve renovation of the second mill building for use as a visitors center and development of the grounds for outdoor use.

Scope Construction began renovations in March 2017, and is expected to finish in fall 2018, followed by the lengthy process of assembling and installing the mural.

In addition to the mural exhibition, the mill building will house a small café, retail store, and interactive projects for participants.
