Shibori Indigo Dyeing
Saturday, September 19
10:30am–1:30 pm

Teens will try their hand at an ancient and fascinating Japanese art of dyeing fabric that results in beautiful, expressive patterns. From the Japanese, "Shibori" means "to wring, squeeze or press." In this workshop, participants will learn about Shibori dyeing techniques, Japan's traditional indigo dyeing industry, and the challenges traditional artisans (and the environment) face from synthetic dye competition. While creating their own Shibori garment, teens will discover how this historic craft has evolved from use in kimono to modern adaptations like high-end denim, clothing, and accessories.

Indigo is messy and stains, so wear old clothes you can get dirty—and bring a long apron if you have one.
